Tools for beginners

It can be super intimidating trying to buy the tools and stuff you need when you first start getting into DIY. When we bought our first house, we got a 10% off coupon for Lowes and decided we would try to buy everything we needed for all the projects on our list ALL AT ONCE. I’m not sure why. 10% off isn’t even that much. We still have stuff we bought that day that has never been used (see old throwback photo at the end of this post).

So we figured we would help you guys learn from our experience. You don’t need all the things. But you’ll probably need some things. Below is a list of tools we’d recommend for the new homeowner, the beginning woodworker, the advanced woodworker, and craftperson.

Note: assuming that they’ll have most everything in the homeowner category

Woodworker II

Note: assuming that they’ll have most everything in the homeowner and woodworker category.

Filming gear

3d printing

Gift ideas

Online services/software

Throwback to our early days buying too much with that 10% off coupon :P

Still not sure why we bought that sledgehammer but I have no regrets about it when I see it on our wall :)

Y’all have done a great job on the lists!
We’ve got a couple of those small, intense flashlights which I describe as “sarcastically bright.” We use ’em in restaurants when the lighting is too low and the menu font is too small (hence the “sarcastically”) and to look in the cupboard under the stovetop when we can’t see the pan we want right away :).

    To Evan and Katelyn
Firstly, I love your videos and they have inspired me a lot. I am 12 years old and want to start woodworking. I love DT (shop class in the U.K) and am top in my class. I am just concerned with using circular saws and jigsaws as I have never used them. I have researched into them, including safety. I would to know your opinion.

Hey Keeran!! We saw your comment on our youtube first, so we replied there, but I also wanted to see if you would want an Instructables Premium membership? We have some extra months racked up that we could give to you and they’ve got some great online classes you can take which are especially awesome f you’re just starting out. Anyway, if you’re interested, click the lets talk tab at the top of this page and lets us know and we can send it to your email :)
