Unexpected gift guide for the DIYer / maker

Hey guys! We haven’t written a blog post that’s not a project tutorial in quite a while, but somehow it’s almost December and that means it’s time to put together a holiday gift guide! We focused on gifts for the DIYer / maker because that has kinda taken over our lives and we don’t know what’s cool in any other genre of gift (“Evan! Did you know they sell hoodies with a pouch for your cat? A pouch for your cat!“)

unexpected gifts for the makerThis is a mix of things we have/love, and things we want, chosen by Evan and myself. The twist – we tried to NOT include tools. Chances are, the person you’re buying for already has a bunch of tools, and there are a ton of tool guides out there if you just want recommendations. This is a guide of slightly-less-obvious stuff that your DIYer friend, family member, or significant other might be into.

What If? by Randall Munroe

Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions. For the person who’s brain is always trying to figure things out, just for the fun of it. http://amzn.to/2ndoOcU

30-ft Retractable Extension Cord

Ok so this one is brushing shoulders with the tool category, but it’s more like a workshop addition. Especially in a small 2-car garage shop like ours, having an extension cord up off the ground is a life saver. http://amzn.to/2Ajgb38

Things Come Apart by Todd McLellan
An awesome book for the person who likes knowing how things come apart and go back together. Evan and I had way too much fun looking at a page and trying to guess what the parts made up. http://amzn.to/2hZfgfV

Neodymium magnets

You might think that magnets are a weird gift. But these magnets, are the best magnets. We’ve used them in so many things, from walnut quick connects to a coat rack with a magnetic key holder. They’re awesome. http://amzn.to/2r9Un8S

Manfrotto  3 Section Aluminum Tripod

If the maker you’re buying for sells their work, is interested in getting into YouTube, or just likes sharing what they make with other people, getting photos/videos is super important and way easier with a tripod. This is the one we use 99% of the time – it’s light weight, sturdy, and can take a lot of shop abuse. http://amzn.to/2whGqED NOTE: this does not come with a swiveling head so you’ll need to choose one. Our favorite is below:

(Bonus points) Pan head for the tripod

This is the pan head we use, and it’s really great for getting those nice panning final shots, BUT even if you’re just taking still photos it makes for quick aim changes. http://amzn.to/2fhX3wh

Field Notes

We are digging these lime green field notes, it would be hard to lose these beacons of neon in the shop. Plus I don’t think we could ever have too many of these, seriously. http://amzn.to/2Ak27GJ

E&K gifts on Etsy

Oh what’s this? You’d like a hand made item for the maker in your life? We just happen to have an Etsy shop (shameless plug!) and if you’d like to support what we do and get a pretty dang cool gift, please check out the goodies :) https://www.etsy.com/shop/EvanAndKatelyn

Yeti

The one cup that keeps our drinks cold in Texas summer garage heat. Evan has the big one, I have the smaller one. And we are pretty much attached to these at the hip. http://amzn.to/2nghnRU

(Bonus points) Get a customized powder coating by our friend Chad at Mancrafting

If Yetis are cool, customized ones are even cooler. Get it, cooler?!?! I’ll let myself out… https://mancraftingtm.com/

DJI Spark

Ok so this is reserved for somebody you really, really like since it’s a little pricier, BUT we haven’t met a maker that doesn’t like a drone. This is the one we have and we did a ton of research before getting it – we think it’s the best bang for the buck, balancing value with ease of use and size (so tiny!) http://amzn.to/2jwip7v

Sugru

Ah Sugru, functional silly putty for the adult. It is super versatile when it comes to fixing things, but also acts as a sealant and glue all at once. Plus it’s fun to play with :) You can see how we used it here last year making holiday decor (before our YouTube days!) http://amzn.to/2jSqEuP

Shop-safe wedding ring

This is something we keep coming back to – silicone wedding rings. You’ll notice we almost always have our rings on in the shop, but beating them up does make us a little nervous! http://amzn.to/2ko5KY6

Cordless vacuum

Because sometimes you don’t want to turn on the shop vac and drag a hose across your garage to clean up a small mess. We use this thing… pretty much every day haha. http://amzn.to/2AyWFjr

Class at a maker space

This might depend on where you’re located, but consider getting them *~*~*~the gift of learning~*~*~* Seriously though, classes are super fun and a great way to learn something new and meet cool folks. Bonus points if you both take the class together :)
